  5. 1) Yes, I think Rake was an effective coach. He demanded the best of his players and got it. He also got his teams to believe in something greater than their individual self. Messina Football.
    2) I think Messina football seems a little farfetched, but I like the idea of a community being brought together by a sport and sharing a passion together.

  7. MIKE BROWERE

    1. Yes, Rake was an effective coach because he won games and state titles. I believe that his style made him successful because he worked the players so hard during practice, that they were more prepared, mentally and physically for each game.
    2. Messina football is insane because high school football players are idolized as heroes and essentially every person in town goes to their games.

That's how I want you to play." and “I have a rule on my team: when we talk to one another, we look each other right in the eye, because I think it's tough to lie to somebody. You give respect to somebody.”

  8. 1) Rake was an effective coach because he got his players ready to play mentally and physically. His drills were often straining on the players, but in the long run they were beneficial to the team and to the players individually. Because he expected a lot out of his players and worked them extremely hard, it was a forgone conclusion that his teams were going to be good.
    2) Messina football is die-hard passion for Messina natives because the people of Messina have nothing else to look to. Football is what brings the town together, and thus is very important, as it is more than just a game. Messina football is better than other towns because of the passion that the people have for it.
    3)

-Walsh's biggest name players were Joe Montana, Jerry Rice, and Steve Young (all Hall of Famers)
-Walsh did not have any very famous quotes, but I found this -- “Nothing is more effective than sincere, accurate praise, and nothing is more lame than a cookie-cutter compliment.”

  9. 1) Rake was an effective coach because he didn’t care about feelings or if you felt sad, he cared about winning and I think this would change the way people would play for him. This style worked for so long because players would embraced the fact he didn’t care what you thought and tried to win as many football games as they could.
    2) Messina football is a little overrated in this town, the fact that they would only give money to the football team is crazy.
    3) -George “Papa Bear” Halas

  10. 1. Coach Rake had an effective coaching style. That is obvious because of the number of state titles his teams won, and all the undefeated seasons he had. His style of coaching guaranteed him wins because he pushed his players to play the best they could.
    2. I think that Messina football is taken way to serious, the town treats football as the center of attention.
    Holger Geshwinder

  11. 1.) I think although he may have been strict and perhaps too harsh on players at times, Coach Rake was the ideal High School football coach and led Messina football to several successful seasons. This ended being a successful coaching style because it installed fear into his players. A fear that motivated players to impress their coach.
2.) Although Messina may be a slightly overrated football team, it is so only because the town is so passionate and dedicated towards their players. With little excitement in a small town, a promising local football team provides some excitement in a small uneventful area. Perhaps fans are a little cocky and passionate about their team, but their team has demonstrated that they have the capabilities of being a truly great squad.
    3.)
    -Vince Lombardi
    - Green Bay Packers Head Coach
    - 5 Super Bowl Championships (In a 7 Year Span, 3 in a row), Super Bowl Trophy Named After Him, Never had a losing season in the NFL, NFL Hall of Fame
“If it doesn’t matter who wins or loses, why do they keep score?”
“It’s not whether you get knocked down, its whether you get back up”
“Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection we can catch excellence.”

  12. 1) Rake was a very effective coach, the reason why he was so effective was because he only accepted perfection from his athletes. He made all his players run that marathon so he knew they were in shape. And his method was so guaranteed because he only accepted perfection.\
    2) Messina football is insane, this town surrounds itself around their football team. The people of the town have nothing to do besides talk about past, current, and future football teams, they are all obsessed with it.
    3)-Pat Riley
-Los Angeles Lakers, New York Knicks, and Miami Heat. (79-08)

  13. 1) Rake is an effective coach because he pushed his players to the edge to they can be the perfect team.
2)Like everyone else said football in Messina is crazy it is to much the whole revolves around it.

    - "Sometimes with a line, whether it's with an individual or you just want to shake things up and maybe get a spark somewhere; sometimes we mix it up in the course of a game.”

  14. 1 - Rake is a good coach that pushed his players to the limit which allowed each player to discover his best talents in order to contribute to the team as much as possible on game day.
2 - The love for a high school football team is a tad excessive. The whole town shouldn't revolve around what a football team is doing. You can have love for a sport, but only to a certain point.
    3 - Alex Ferguson
    - most known for coaching Scotland and Manchester United
    - won the Premier League (10 times), the FA Cup (5 times), the League Cup twice, the FA Charity/Community Shield (8 times), the UEFA Champions League twice, UEFA Cup Winners' Cup and UEFA Super Cup once each. English Football Hall of Fame. Premier League Manager of the Year, 8 times. and much more
    - David Beckham, Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney, Ryan Giggs
    - on Giggs. " I remember the first time I saw him. He was 13 and just floated over the ground like a cocker spaniel chasing a piece of silver paper in the wind " - Known for finding talent anywhere and everywhere.

  15. Yes, I think Rake was an incredibly effective coach, I mean numbers don't lie, just look at his accomplishments. 13 state titles a streak that is unprecedented and more wins then anybody else, its pretty obvious he was effective. HE was so effective because he expected the most out of his players in turn making his players expect the most out of themselves, he kept them hungry because nothing was ever good enough so his players killed themselves trying to stick it to their coach as if saying "there, is that enough for you".
2.)I think that Messina football plays way too big a role in the town, football should not be the top priority of a town. They should have better things to worry about. One town cannot live and die on the outcome of a high school football game. I understand it brings them together, but still it plays too big of a role.
    3.)Paul Westhead
LA Lakers, Chicago Bulls, Loyola Marymount University, Denver Nuggets, George Mason, Orlando Magic, Phoenix Mercury, Oregon Womens Basketball team.
Paul was one of the originators of the run n gun fast break style of offense in basketball. He won an NBA title as coach of the Lakers in 1980, and led Loyola Marymount to Elite Eight, and Won the WNBA title as head coach of the Phoenix Mercury.
"I coach a style that demands maximum speed, every second of the game," he says. "... That's the point of The System. No downtime for your opponent. Wear them down, and victory will come easy."

  16. 1. I think coach Rake was an effective coach, all you need to look at was the numbers he had, and all the state championships he won, but what put coach Rake over the top was his passion and determination to not only be the best at what he does, but to make his players be the best.
    2. My opinion of messina football is it's a way of life in that town and on fridays it gets crazy.
    3. Coach Ditka was a asst. Coach with the Dallas Cowboys(1973-1981). He was a head coach for the Chicago Bears(1982-1992). And also a head coach for the New Orleans Saints(1997-1999). He was a 5 time pro bowler, 3 time super bowl winner, and 2 time AP NFL Coach of the year. A star player he coached was william "The Refrigerator" Perry. A famous quote was "you're never a loser until you quit trying"

  17. 1. Coach Rake was an effective coach because he had won so many championships in such a short period of time. Whats significant is that high school is unlike college of the NFL because you cannot recruit players, and you have to rely on the talent of players in the area. To be able to take so many different teams and to be able to be consistantly good is quite a feat.
    2. My opinoin of Messina is that it is the classic example of how success in a popular sport can do to a small town. The teams success had brought together a town and they all closed down the stores to cheer on the pride of their town.
    3. Joe Paterno- He was the Coach of Penn State University from 1966 to 2011. He was inducted into the American Football Coaches Hall of Fame, while still coaching. He also holds a record for the most wins in bowl games. He also is the record holder for the most all time major college coaching wins.
